  2. IU has some of the most sophisticated cyberinfrastructure in higher education -- and undergraduate students are welcome to apply for accounts on advanced systems including the Quarry (http://pti.iu.edu/ci/systems/quarry) virtual machine environment, and the Big Red (http://pti.iu.edu/ci/systems/big-red), RockHopper (http://pti.iu.edu/ci/systems/rockhopper), and Data Capacitor (http://pti.iu.edu/ci/systems/data-capacitor) parallel computing environments.

You can apply for an account for two different types of use:

Undergraduate research projects (proposals from individual undergraduate students with a faculty sponsor)
Classroom use of IU’s advanced cyberinfrastructure (proposals from faculty members who would like to use these systems in classroom instruction)

Applications should be brief, and will be acted on quickly.
The due date for spring 2012 applications is February 15, 2012. We expect to approve all clearly written requests, provided we have sufficient capacity on IU systems to support them. Undergrads at IU regional campuses are especially encouraged to apply.

Application prepartion details are available at:

    http://pti.iu.edu/news/call-participation-undergraduate-students-apply-use-iu-supercomputers

This process is overseen by the Collaboration and Engagement Support team of the Research Technologies Division of UITS, and executed as part of its mission of support for IU cyberinfrastructure and as part of the Pervasive Technology Institute’s efforts to foster a well-educated 21st century workforce in the US.

  3. The UITS Advanced Visualization Lab will be hosting a sequence of tutorials on ParaView, a highly scalable, open source application for scientific visualization.

Session 1 will provide an introduction to ParaView, including how to serve ParaView from IU's HPC systems and how to run ParaView on IU's high-end visualization displays.

Session 2 will be led by a ParaView expert from Kitware Inc., the lead organization for ParaView and the associated VTK (Visualization ToolKit) library.  Topics will include running ParaView in distributed grid environments and extending ParaView with custom scripts and plugins.

ICAC is the leading conference on autonomic computing techniques, foundations, and applications. Autonomic computing refers to methods and means for automated management of performance, fault, security, and configuration with little involvement of users or administrators. Systems introducing new autonomic features are becoming increasingly prevalent, motivating research that spans a variety of areas, from computer systems, networking, software engineering, and data management to machine learning, control theory, and bio-inspired computing. ICAC brings together researchers and practitioners across these disciplines to address multiple facets of adaptation and self-management in computing systems and applications from different perspectives.  Autonomic computing solutions are sought for clouds, grids, data centers, enterprise software, internet services, data services, smart phones, embedded systems, and sensor networks.  In these environments, resources and applications must be managed to maximize performance and minimize cost, while maintaining predictable and reliable behavior in the face of varying workloads, failures, and malicious threats. Papers are solicited from all areas of autonomic computing.

Submissions will be accepted through March 9, 2012.

  8. 8th IEEE International Conference on eScience
    October 8-12, 2012
    Chicago, IL, USA
    http://www.ci.uchicago.edu/escience2012/

The eScience 2012 conference is designed to bring together leading international and interdisciplinary research communities, developers, and users of eScience applications and enabling IT technologies. The conference serves as a forum to present the results of the latest applications research and product/tool developments and to highlight related activities from around the world. We are now entering the second decade of eScience and the 2012 conference gives an opportunity to take stock of what has been achieved so far and look forward to the challenges and opportunities the next decade will bring.

A special emphasis of the 2012 conference is on advances in the application of technology in a particular discipline. Accordingly, significant advances in applications science and technology will be considered as important as the development of new technologies themselves. Further, we welcome contributions in educational activities under any of these disciplines.

As a result, the conference will be structured around two e-Science tracks:

           • eScience Algorithms and Applications
                   • eScience application areas, including:
                           • Physical sciences
                           • Biomedical sciences
                           • Social sciences and humanities
                   • Data-oriented approaches and applications
                   • Compute-oriented approaches and applications
                   • Extreme scale approaches and applications
           • Cyberinfrastructure to support eScience
                   • Novel hardware
                   • Novel uses of production infrastructure
                   • Software and services
                   • Tools

The conference proceedings will be published by the IEEE Computer Society Press, USA and will be made available online through the IEEE Digital Library. Selected papers will be invited to submit extended versions to a special issue of the Future Generation Computer Systems (FGCS) journal.

  10. Data to Insight Center Seminars

"Temporal Data Mining of Scientific Data Provenance"
    Wednesday, February 8th, 4:00pm - 5:00pm
Innovation Center, Room 105, 2719 E 10th St., Indiana University, Bloomington, IN

Peng Chen, Data to Insight Center, School of Informatics and Computing, Indiana University

Abstract: Provenance of digital scientific data is an important piece of the metadata of the data object. It can however grow voluminous quickly because the granularity level of capture can be high. It can also be quite feature rich. We propose a representation of the provenance data based on logical time that reduces the feature space. Creating time and frequency domain representations of the provenance, we apply classification, clustering and association rule mining to the abstract representations to determine their usefulness. We evaluate the temporal representation algorithm and its usefulness using a 10 GB database of provenance data.
