HPA evaluating newly released Intel system

HPA is currently involved in evaluating a newly released Intel system named Romley. This single node system features two Intel Xeon 8-core E5-2680 2.70 GHz 130W processors, 8.00 GT/s QuickPath Interconnect (QPI), 64 GB memory. Three benchmarking suites including HPCC, SPEC OMP2001, and SPEC MPI2007 will be tested on this system.

HPCC results published on the web site of UTK Innovative Computing Laboratory

HPA conducted benchmarking of HPCC extensively on Mason. A set of result on various numbers of node (including one, two, four, eight, and sixteen nodes) has published on the web site of UTK Innovative Computing Laboratory (ICL).

SPECMPI2007 results published on the SPEC web site

HPA conducted benchmarking of SPECMPI2007 on Mason, and the results are published on the SPECMPI web site. The results include two parts, with varying numbers of cores. One set of results is for medium data. The other is for the large data.

SPECOMP2001 results published on the SPEC web site

HPA conducted benchmarking of SPECOMP2001 on Mason, the newly acquired machine, and the results are published on the SPEC web site. The results include two parts. One is for the medium data set, while the other for the large data set.

Benchmarking new cluster system

Mason is a new cluster system fwhich aims to conquer problems having very large memory demand. The system features four 8-core sockets and large memory (512 GB) on each node. HPA is currently conducting benchmarking with different suites including HPCC, SPECOMP2001, and SPECMPI20007.

Benchmarking IBM iDataPlex Systems

One of the responsibilities of the HPA group is performance evaluation of new systems. Recently, IU has acquired several systems and HPA is actively involved in performance analysis on these new systems. Recently completed was a comparison of the performance of an IBM iDataPlex cluster using Linux or Windows HPC server operating systems. The HPLinpack benchmark (Used to determine Top500 computers) achieved approximately 80% of theoretical maximum performance under both operating systems. The commercial benchmark SPEC MPI2007 was also run and the results have been published here. Other benchmarks, provided by the NSF for acceptance testing were also run. Overall, performance was found to be similar when the system used Linux or Windows HPC server as its operating system. Results of individual benchmark components were mixed, sometimes Linux outperformed Windows HPC, sometimes not. The published SPEC results are typical of the outcome of this analysis.

Benchmarking an HS22 blade

The HPA group completed benchmarking of an Intel 5570 (Nehalem) based HS22 blade. The results of the SPEC OMP2001 benchmark suite for the medium and large datasets have been published. Other applications used by IU researcher were also tested.

SPEC activities

The manager of the HPA group serves as IU's representative to the Standard Performance Analysis Corporation (SPEC) High Performance Group (HPG) committee. As part of this committee, the HPG group has tested the recently released MPI2007 v2.0 suite and has contributed a suite component to the developing OMP2010 suite.
